JCRC Statement on Title VI Complaint Against Montgomery County Public Schools

JCRC Statement

The following is a statement from Guila Franklin Siegel, chief operating officer of the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of Greater Washington.

“We are aware of the Title VI complaint filed against Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) by the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law. While the JCRC is not a party to this action, we worked closely with the affected child and family during the time period in question, urging MCPS to take stronger steps to ensure the student’s safety in the face of relentless antisemitic bullying.

“Every year, the JCRC supports dozens of Jewish families throughout the DMV whose children experience school-based antisemitism, advocating on their behalf with school officials and partnering with educators to implement responsive anti-bias education. This case was one of the more difficult we have encountered. As always, we thank our colleagues at the Brandeis Center for ensuring that Jewish families can seek legal relief to compel school districts to respond forcefully to the hatred taking place in their schools.

“The complaint filed last week speaks to the devastating and long-term consequences of antisemitism on children and families — and the considerable work that remains for MCPS to properly address it. Whatever the outcome of this particular matter, the JCRC will continue to urge MCPS to take immediate and proactive steps, including better teacher and staff training, additional Holocaust and Jewish peer education programs, and stronger enforcement of social media guidelines to ensure that every Jewish child feels safe and protected at school.”
