JCRC Statement
October 28, 2024
The following is a statement from Guila Franklin Siegel, chief operating officer of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, on Cox Farms.
“For decades, Cox Farms has combined family fun with messages of social justice. This year, however, the owners decided to use their prominent signage and social media platforms to propagate one-sided rhetoric and disinformation about the Israel-Hamas war. Even more concerning, after hearing from Jewish people across the region that their statements were profoundly divisive, ill-informed, and hurtful, the owners rejected JCRC’s request for a conversation aimed at building understanding within and between communities. Unless Cox Farms chooses to reverse course, we urge school districts to reconsider contracting with Cox Farms for school trips in upcoming academic years.
The spread of toxic disinformation related to Israel does not stay confined to a single sign or social media post. It adds fuel to an environment that has resulted in record levels of antisemitism over the past year that continue to afflict our region and the country, and it explains why so many Jewish children and families continue to feel ostracized from their schools and communities. During the fall season of school trips to Cox Farms, Jewish families have sent thousands of emails to their school districts relaying these concerns, which have been amplified by the JCRC to school leaders. We are disheartened that Cox Farms has not acknowledged the concerns shared by Jewish families and will not even engage in a conversation. Such a dismissive attitude toward a significant segment of their clientele and neighbors speaks volumes.
Cox Farms has been a beloved institution in our area for a long time. With that status comes a responsibility to treat everyone with civility and respect. In refusing to even consider the concerns raised by Jewish families, Cox Farms tarnishes its reputation as a stalwart of the community and a leader in pursuing justice and peace for all people. Our offer to meet stands.”
